Director Report, March 12, 2007 Orchestra
Congratulations to the Port Clinton High School String Orchestra for their performance March 2, 2007 at Sandusky High School for the OMEA North West Region State Orchestra Adjudicated Event.
Our orchestra performed in front of four judges in class B, the second highest classification and received three II’s (“Excellent”) ratings and one I (“Superior”) ratings for an overall rating of II (“Excellent”).
Featured student soloists with the orchestra were Caly Laurents and Sam Rider on Violin, Jamie Wue on Piano, Harrision Baldwin on Viola, and Emily Rounds on Cello. Al of our orchestra students are to be commended for their hard work in preparing for this event!
Port Clinton High School string players were treated to a special visit by Robert S. Frost, a renowned composer of string music and education materials. Mr. Frost’s career spans the past 30 plus years. He has been closely associated with Edna Hansen for many of those years and she made it possible for him to pay us a visit while in Ohio visiting family.
Students recounted the various pieces Mr. Frost had either composed or arranged that they had played throughout the years and he told us many stories about the circumstances for those specific works. In addition, Robert S. Frost shared what it is like to be a composer and how he still remains active as a player and conductor in addition to composing. Our students truly enjoyed his visit.
Middle School Orchestra students had a very positive experience at this year’s district festival hosted by Margaretta. The orchestra clinician was Dr. Elaine Colprit, Department Chair, String Education from BGSU. 7th and 8th graders are currently preparing for OMEA solo & ensemble contest, deadline is March 20, 2007 and complete details are TBA, but many 7th and 8th graders have expressed an interest in participating as a soloist or in an ensemble. The date for middle school solo and ensemble is Saturday April 21, 2007 and will be help at Genoa Area High School.
Thus ends the orchestra report, respectfully submitted,
Orchestra Director
